Assist. Prof. Ankica Kovač from the Department of Energy, Power, and Environmental Engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture in Zagreb presented a project worth 480,000.00 EUR at the Westin Hotel on the application of hydrogen energy, which is being implemented at that faculty.

For the first time in Croatia, a pilot localized auxiliary system will be installed to provide electricity in the case of climate extremes and natural disasters. The system will be installed at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb.

This is a project ‘Securing electricity in the case of climate extremes and natural disasters’ which uses highly sophisticated green hydrogen technology and renewable energy sources, primarily solar, to develop a 2 kW microgrid to supply electricity and heat without emitting accompanying harmful gases. Hydrogen will be produced via water electrolysis and converted into electricity in fuel cells. For the time being, a microgrid is being developed at the FSB to provide electricity for systems such as hospitals, police, city services, which in no case and case of potential climate extremes and natural disasters (heat shocks, extreme cold, storms, floods, and earthquakes) must not be left without electricity, but the project will have a much wider application.
